My Top 10 (Horror)

Whenever a new list of top 10 movies pops up, it usually makes its way to my desk.  For the most part the lists are kind of spot on at least when it comes to genres such as action, comedy and romance, horror on the other hand is a completely different beast.  Now I want to make this clear that my list consists of movies that have a supernatural element to it(or are just gory) I can watch over an over again and not be bored.  I don’t have stuff on the list solely because it’s a classic but more because they are fun to watch and to me the most important thing about movies is that you enjoy what you see. And now on with the list:

10.  Cabin Fever – This movie is widely overlooked, it’s got a former Power Ranger naked, Rider Strong (aka Shawn Hunter of Boy Meets World) and even more awesome a flesh eating virus.  They aren’t fighting a supernatural force, they’re fighting amongst themselves trying not to be the next to become infected.

9. Aaah! Zombies!!- I like this movie because of it’s take on the genre.  The movie is shown through the perspective and both the infected zombies and the uninfected.  It’s a pretty solid script and cast and more importantly its funny as shit!

8. The Thing – Holy shit do I love this movie, it one of only 3 films that I like Kurt Russell in.  The Thing was the first movie I had seen that showed me all the possibilities of practical effects.  October 14, 2011 the prequel to this masterpiece is going to be released and honestly I can’t wait.  It’s going to tell the story of the first scientific team to discover the alien life, the Norwegians from the first film and best of all it stars Eric Christian Olsen.  My only wish is that that use more practical effect and less CGI unlike the recent Nightmare on Elm Street.

7.  Night Watch – This movie based on the Russian novel of the same name was got to be one of the best all round movies I have ever seen.  Made for a mere 4.2 million dollars (in US currency) Night Watch proves that an awesome movie can be made for a reasonable amount of money as apposed to Hollywood’s theory that if it sucks just throw more money into it. There is way to much to explain about this movie that it is just easier if you go here. WIKI!

The sequel was just as good and Fox Searchlight purchased the rights to the third and final installment but hasn’t begun productions, let’s just hope that even though an American company bought it they will leave it to the Russians who have done a fantastic job thus far to make the final film their way.

6. Let The Right One In – Another film from across the Atlantic based on a novel of the same name.  The premise is a classic one boy get beat up by bullies, boy meets girl, girl kills bullies, boy and girl go steady, girl isn’t a girl and is actually a vampire.  The Sweddish version is awesome the American version not so much but Hit-Girl is in it so I guess thats a plus??

5. Once Bitten – I know I’m gonna get shit for this but there are vampires in it so it counts as a horror movie (well Comedy-Horror), but I love this movie and have probably seen it well over 200 times (I’m not kidding). Jim Carrey at his finest!

4. My Best Friends A Vampire – Jeremy (played by House’s Robert Sean Leonard) is a newly turned vampire who upon finding out what he’s been turned into decides to live his life as a “good” vampire.  With a mentor showing him the ropes it’s up to him, he has to convince his best friend that he’s not trying to eat him all the while trying to keep a crazed vampire slayer from killing him.  I really don’t know what it is about this movie that I like so much but if it is on T.V. I will watch it.

3. The Halloween Series – A series of films that never went the campy route.  Yes they went a little off the beat path with a storyline about a cult, but unlike Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street they never went the cheesey 80′s comedy horror route they kept it scary…the way it should be.

2. Nightmare on Elm Street Series -  The quintessential bad guy, Freddy Kreuger.  Even during the series’ campy phase the kills raised the bar of inventiveness.  Recently the remake was released and it wasn’t bad the acting was great, but that wasn’t the problem the CGI was.  I’m all for CGI but when it come to horror movies practical applications should never be over looked, case in point: Freddy coming through the wall (new vs old)

The older one is far better than the new you because the old one was REAL and that was frightening as opposed the the obviously fake remake.

1. Evil Dead – By far my favorite film of all time (not including the Batman series i am a huge Batman-ophile). Bruce Campbell shines in this movie and from the story to all the gags were perfect.  As of late director Sam Raimi tried to go back to his horror roots after the epic fail that was Spider-Man 3 with Drag Me To Hell.  A lot of people love that flick and to them I say, “you people are fucking idiots, the only good thing about that movie was Justin Long.”  I mean come on people whats scarier Peter Parker dancing or Tree Rape??
